This apparent paradox has given rise to many a skeptical Bible critic to ‘prove‘ the ‘absurdity‘ of certain of Jesus‘ sayings. Here, too, the Lord enlightens us regarding the meaning of these words:
‘The dead who bury their dead are all those who set great store by the pomp of a funeral. They are more or less dead themselves since they honor death and consider this very important. Man‘s true death is selfishness, and its spirit is pride craving above all for glory. And thus a pompous funeral for a deceased is nothing else but the last fling of his pride for a person who has been spiritually dead for a long time.‘ [GGJ.01:103,1].
